What is CIRCuiTS™?

CIRCuiTS™ is an evidenced based psychological therapy that improves cognitive or thinking skills such as concentration, memory and planning. It is a web-based computerised cognitive remediation therapy program, delivered by a therapist, in which clients complete a range of abstract and real-life tasks to gain transferable skills to tackle cognitive difficulties.

CIRCuiTS™ is CE/UKCA marked, and its uniqueness lies in targeting clients' metacognition. Metacognition is the ability to understand, think about, and manage our own thinking. It supports clients in developing effective strategies to aid cognitive skills and transfer them to everyday life, producing long-lasting change.

Is CIRCuiTS™ right for me?

Many people with enduring mental health conditions also experience cognitive difficulties. CIRCuiTS™ is leading the way in promoting effective cognitive and functional change by targeting metacognition and providing massed practice of basic thinking skills.

Service users have been involved in developing CIRCuiTS™, and it has been evaluated as highly acceptability and easy to use. It is available on many computer and tablet systems and can be used with or without a therapist. CIRCuiTS™ therapy consists of around 40 sessions with a therapist at a recommended frequency of 3 times a week. This can include independent sessions that you can do on your own.

What does a CIRCuiTS™ session involve?

CIRCuiTS™ therapists work collaboratively with clients to identify cognitive strengths and difficulties. They tailor the software to their client’s needs and support them in developing a set of personalised strategies to improve their thinking skills.

Using strategies to complete tasks is key to CIRCuiTS™ metacognitive approach. Clients choose strategies to help them complete each task and evaluate their usefulness afterwards. Clients can track strategies' usefulness and explore how to adapt them to different activities and contexts in real life.

During a session, clients work through the CIRCuiTS™ tasks together with their therapist. The therapist facilitates metacognition by encouraging clients to learn about and regulate their own thinking. This enables meaningful real-world changes to achieve goals. Goals for therapy are set collaboratively and can be recorded and tracked using CIRCuiTS™. The gains achieved in therapy can be practised outside of sessions. For example, CIRCuiTS™ tasks can be completed independently at home and/or by transferring learning to real-life activities.

How can I provide CIRCuiTS™ to my clients?

The first step is training to be a CIRCuiTS™ therapist. CIRCuiTS™ has its own online training course, which provides clinicians with an understanding of the theory and research surrounding Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) and develops practical skills in using CIRCuiTS™. The course aims to give you the knowledge and skills necessary to start delivering CIRCuiTS™. Therapists must also have ongoing, regular supervision with an experienced CRT therapist as soon as they start working with CIRCuiTS™ clients. You can find out more about the training here: https://www.circuitstherapyinfo.com/training
